The muskie season got off to a great start in our area. Our very own board regular, Muskie Old Man (M.O.M.), arrived June 20 for a week of fishing muskies and some walleyes.

On Sunday, June 21, M.O.M. and his lovely wife were fishing a weed bed in about 6 feet of water. Mrs. M.O.M. raised a very large fish and then after a few mins, M.O.M. asked permission to throw at the fish himself. Permission was granted and well, you can almost expect what happened next.

The behemoth grabbed his jointed Crane bait and the fight was on. Mrs. MOM dutifully put the net under this fish and held on tight as it started to show its unhappiness at being caged.

MOM then uttered something about disappointment at the 54" length because he had thought it looked bigger when it followed in the first time and because it was only equal to his previous personal best.

Well I don't know about you but when a guy steals a huge fish from his wife and then complains that it's ONLY 54" long, he might be expecting the muskie gods to take notice and perhaps even things out somehow.

What do you think he could expect? Leader malfunctions? Massive backlashes that end up in lost bucktails? Snags that snap a rod in two? Hmmmmmmm.......I know one thing. I wouldn't want that kind of karma coming my way.

All in all, still a great fish and a great week. MOM somewhat redeemed himself by putting Mrs MOM on a nice northern and doing a good job on the net.

Without further ado, here is the 54" legal Lake of the Woods muskie caught June 21, 2009 in Sabaskong Bay!! Also pictured is a shot of the head as the fish is being set back in the water and the 39" northern caught and released by Mrs MOM on June 25, 2009.

Congratulations to both anglers on such a great catch and good, quick release.

hello my fellow anglers. Let me start by saying I never meant to take that Musky away from my wife honest. But when she brought her up a couple times and did the figure 8 and it didn't bite I thought hey if I ask permision it won't be so bad if I get lucky and catch it----wrong she still talks about how I stole her fish.... And yes I did say darn it is only 54 inches but I did mean it in an nice way, does that count? I do have 9 fish at 54 and was looking for one a little bigger and have had them hooked we guess around the mid 60 inch range on L.O.W. and that aint no fish story.
Oh by the way my wife did tell the story right except she left out the part where she did a GREAT job neting the fish and then the fish rolled and twisted in the net and all I saw was the bottom of my wifes tenis shoes going over the side of the boat and I grab her by the pant waste and pulled her back in the boat, her face did get a little wet and she never let go of that net, god lover her. I wouldn't trade her for any other fishing partner that I have had over the years. You think this will help shake the bad karma?

I don't think the muskie gods will let you off the hook that easy, but you might have appropriately made it right with the Mrs.

Maybe we should make a poll and see what everyone else thinks. I'll try and put one on a new thread and we'll get you the peoples answer.

Perhaps the muskie gods will ease up on you if the people think you had paid enough penance.
