Summer has really arrived in the Eagle River area - -with a vengeance!
Surface water temps on the Eagle River Chain of 28 lakes (largest freshwater
chain of lakes in the world) have risen to 78 to 80 degrees. Muskie action
has picked up very strongly with the warmer water temps. Early morning
seems to provide the best bite at the moment (5am-10am), with evening being
another prime time. Most all baits will work now (surface, crankbaits,
bucktails etc.). The one trick that will produce a strike right now is
"speed" - -the muskies want that bait moving fast! Bucktails pulled fast
over weeds has been the preferred method. Muskies up to 40 inches are
being caught and released, by working thick weed edges in 3 to 8 feet of
water, pulling bucktails just under the surface. A lot of fish have been
taken using the "figure 8", boatside.
A muskie will follow in fast behind your bait, seemingly dart off, only to
come back darting back in to crush the bait as the "figure 8" is performed.

Walleye are hitting well in the Eagle River area. Fish 15 feet of water or
less in and around the weeds. Use a 1/16 or 1/9 ounce jig tipped with a
fathead or large leech.

Northern action is strong in the Eagle River area. Fish 10 feet of water or
less in and around the weeds. Use a Husky Jerk in a minnow or perch pattern,
or a spinner bait in chartreuse and white. Mixed bag on sizes, but lots of
fun.

Smallmouth bass are providing some real good action in the Eagle River area.
Fish 5 to 15 feet of water off of break edges. Use a watermelon colored 4
inch Senko, rigged "whacky," or a #3 Mepps.

Crappies in the Eagle River are putting on a great bite. Fish 15 feet of
water or less in and around the weeds. The crappies are active and
scattered up-and-down the water column. Use a crappie minnow under a
slip-bobber, a Mini-Mite, or Cubby jig. Some nice slabs being taken.

Bluegills are providing some furious action, as they hit anything and
everything in the Eagle River area. Fish 5 feet of water or less over
muddy bottom. Mixed bag on sizes.

Perch in the Eagle River area are hanging with the walleyes in 15 feet of
water or less in and around weeds. The perch are hugging the bottom. Use a
crappie minnow or a chunk of crawler. Lots action, albeit there are plenty
of small ones mixed in with the "eaters."
