Muskie in the Eagle River area are doing very well. Fish in and on the
outside edge of the weeds in 6 to 10 feet of water (the weed growth on the
Eagle River Chain of 28 lakes- - largest freshwater chain of lakes in the
world- - has been exemplary this year). Use a spinner, topwater, or very
small crankbait. Best action is between mid-morning until dark. Mixed bag
of sizes, with fish coming in from around 38 to 44 inches (including some
very nice tiger muskies), and some even bigger, here-and-there.
Excellent action for walleye in the Eagle River area. The walleye are
locating on the deep edges of the weeds (8 to 12 feet of water), and on the
gravel apron approaching the weeds. Look for a sharp, quicker drop off,
rather than a gentle slope. Use a 1/8 or 1/16 ounce jig, tipped with a
leech, chunk of crawler, fathead minnow, or Berkley Gulp. Sizes will vary,
but some real nice fish are being caught.
Northerns are putting on a good bite in the Eagle River area. Fish the weeds
in 6 to 10 feet of water. Use a white or chartreuse spinner bait, small
topwater, a bass Night Walker, or a Poe's Jackpot. Some bigger northerns (30
plus inches) are being caught on muskie baits.
In the Eagle River area, smallmouth bass are locating over the gravel apron
outside the weeds in 12 to 20 feet of water. Use a crawler, leech or minnow
on a jig.
Largemouth bass in the Eagle River are hanging in the "slop." Fish 8 feet
of water or less, targeting lily pads, wood, structure (like docks) or brush
piles. Use a spinner bait, pre-rigged plastic worm, a crawler, leech or
minnow.
Panfish are locating in one general area in the Eagle River area. Fish the
weeds in 8 to 15 feet of water, using a bobber with a Mini Mite or crappie
minnow. Target cribs, along with the pockets near the deep side of the
weeds, or off the weeds in the gravel apron. Some savvy anglers are also
getting decent crappie action fishing the hard bottom edges of mud flats in
20 feet of water. Use a Corky (little, fat bobber, with a weight and then a
hook) tipped with a minnow. Panfish action is good, but not furious, and
you'll be doing some sorting.
Good Luck to all.
