Walleye fishing in the Western Basin has been very productive. The cooler temperatures, clean water and abundant minnows have kept the bite well above average for August. We had the the opportunity to take Capt. Mike's Granddaughter Aly and her friend Bekka out for a day of Walleye fishing. The two ladies were avid athletes both playing baseball for Northview HS. Aly pitches and Bekka plays shortstop. On to the fishing adventure! We drifted for about an hour without any luck there was no wind so we switched over and started trolling and in not much time we tied into our first Walleye. We did keep moving North to deeper water until we reached 32 ft. Our target was East Sister as a guide and the fishing got better. The two ladies took to fishing right away and had no problem understanding what to do and when to do it. Bekka took her turn and landed a nice 23 in. Walleye you should of seen the smiles. We continued to catch some 16 in to 20 in nice Walleye with both girls alternating turns. It was Aly's turn next and BAMM the line snapped off with a vigor and immediately went behind the boat from the weight of this big fish. " It's either a big Sheep Head or a monster Walleye. Aly grabbed the Rod & Reel and begin to reel in this big fish with the Rod doubled over we encouraged her to keep the rod tip up and reel in slowly. Capt. Mike was there with the big net extended out as far as it would go. We were all anxious to see this fish. Aly did great reeling it in and the last couple feet she had to walk backwards to get the fish within a safe distance for Capt. Mike to net. One last reel and a step backward and in the net it was for the record book. " It's a huge Walleye Aly and Bekka shouted and into the boat it came. Everyone starred in awe at this huge fish. It was fat with a big girth and wide tail and a mouth you could put your fist in. Mike measured it and was in the 30 in. range flopping around not liking it one bit. We put the fish in the cooler and all gave a sigh of relief. Aly and Bekka suggested this is a good time to break for lunch and a soft drink while still fishing. We finished up with the girls limit + 3. Thanks again to Capt. Lenny from Get Reel Charters & Capt. Jimmy from Diamond Eye Charters helping us make this another successful fishing adventure on the Sunchaser. We wish both ladies the very best, Aly starts her senior year at Northview and Bekka goes off to start college at Tri State in Angola,In. Capt Mike & Capt. Ron
