I stopped at Bay View this a.m. to get some 2" minnows. Motored around until we (two of us) spotted botom fish on the locator, then anchored and sent down perch rigs with minnows on one hook, crawler pieces on the other. I caught two perch as fast as I could get the rig down, then it shut off. Both hit minnows.
I rigged a 3/4 ounce Rat-L-Trap - chrome/blue - and started casting. The wind was rocking us around hard. These lures punch through the wind better than most . I quickly hit a small pike, then a 32" slabside. My buddy hit one, and we pulled anchor to drift and cast. He used a gold/black 'Trap. A fast retrieve just below the surface was best, along the deep weed edges. We ran the motor occasionally to reposition so we could cast from deeper water to shallow. We landed six pike and missed at least that many more. An occasional smallmouth bass kept things interesting.
We had hoped for enough perch for a fish fry, but the pike were a great consolation prize.
