Earlier this week I marked a loose school of fish at fifty feet just off the breakline into deep water on the Black Bottom side of the bay, more or less across from the old Esky ore docks. Most were about a foot off bottom. I hoped they were perch, and two of us worked them with jigs, spoons, and floating jighead rigs using crawler pieces as bait as well as Gulp soft plastic dressings. No takers. I've taken lots of perch in depths of sixty five feet and deeper in southern Lake Michigan (WI and IL).

If they were not perch, I suppose they were burbot, big gobies, whitefish, shad, walleyes, sheepshead, or even deep smallmouths. Does anyone know what they most likely were?
