I'm having trouble with my jigs spinning like crazy... is it the not I'm tying? How can I stop this annoyance?

Try using a small barrel swivel and a leader about 2 feet long. I normally use a jig stick with no reel and use Woodstock braided tip-up line a barrel swivel and then a Power Strike leader. It works for me and then if you have to change baits just cut the leader and retie your new jig on.
