Well the snow is raising havoc with the ice conditions. More reports of dangerous 'break threws' but luckily no one has drown. It seems the snow really hindering the ice building because of the insulating factor and the weight factor. There is at least 14 inches of snow everywhere with some drifts up to 3 feet deep.
Some lakes have 4 to 6 inches in spots then not far away there is only 2 inches. Several fisherman have fallen in even close to shore. You must be careful and pound the ice in front of you with a spud HARD before taking a step there. Four wheels and snowmobiles are surely taking a risk right now.
The good news is the walleyes are biting fairly well but it is a late afternoon bite into the evening darkness. Use a tip up with a medium sucker minnow or medium shiner. The northerns are giving more action during the day.
They all are in 4 to 12 twelve feet of water for the most part.
Some perch are also being caught on waxies and a jig pole. There still aren't many guys out fishing for panfish as compared to walleye and northern pike.
Be safe out there, and try to always fish with a friend. With bad ice conditions, it is smart business not to go it alone.
For those muskie dudes that are planning to go to the Tri- Esox Muskie Show at Harper College next week, we will have some great deals.
Good luck fishing,
Ranger Rick
