Ice is starting to pull away from the north shores of lakes, with
erosion, thinning, and cracking become more prevalent. Extreme caution is
urged, as the ice fishing season winds down.
Perch action is good. Fish 20-35 feet of water,
over mud flat areas. The perch are tight to the bottom. Best action coming
on crappies minnows or wigglers, with spikes and waxies producing
off-and-on.
The crappie biteis fair. It should pick up as
melting continues, and oxygenated water starts flowing into holes and open
spots in the ice. Right now crappies are suspending up and down the water
column in 15-30 feet of water. Target areas anywhere outside of the weeds
to mid-lake mudflats. Use a crappie minnow or a waxie. Best bite is early
morning or later afternoon into evening.
Bluegills are in the same areas as the crappies. The bluegills are suspending in 15-30 feet of water, anywhere in the water
column, from outside the weeds to over mudflats. Action is fair. Use a
spike or a waxie.
Savvy anglers going for panfish in the Eagle River area need to be mobile as
the fish move around quite a bit. Be patient, drill a lot of holes, use a
flasher, and be prepared to move. No one spot will produce consistently.
