Considering the report posted a few weeks or so ago where they were encouraging the harvest of muskies... They are letting you know you have the option to keep or release them but I just find it odd that the fish and boat commision is spot burning like this. The spots to fish are in BOLD letters on there website.

Now that walleye season is closed and trout season does not open until April 17, anglers can take advantage of the endless musky and pike season. Anglers have an excellent opportunity in the Tionesta Pool of the Allegheny River to harvest or release unharmed musky or northern pike. Musky must be at least 40 inches in length and the daily limit is (1) per day and northern pike must be at least 24 inches with a limit of (2) per day. Nebraska Bridge located on the upper end of Tionesta Lake is also a productive musky spot. Anglers catch several musky from the bridge. Also upstream from Nebraska Bridge at Newtown Flats is also a productive musky spot. Anglers are reminded that approved trout waters are closed to fishing. On Tionesta Creek, the approved trout area is from the confluence of the South Branch and West Branch downstream to the Kelletvile Bridge.

Very irresponsible. No consideration for anglers. Things like this should not be posted on-line by the PFBC.
Maybe we should post the authors address with a sign that reads FREE BEER!!

this is the info at the top of the report...
Reports compiled by Chad Foster (chfoster@state.pa.us), Northwest Regional Education Specialist, using information provided by Waterways Conservation Officers, Area Fisheries Managers and other PFBC staff.
Last time I tried to email him and did not get a reply. I called the number for the executive director and they told me to call Al Woomer who I guess is the district manager. He called me back the next day and basically agreed that posting that kind of report is irresponsible. I don't know who is mad at the muskies up there and pushing these kind of reports but they work for the f&bc and this doesn't seem to "protect or conserve" which I believe is part of their mission statement.

Why is the harvest of muskies from the Tionesta area being encouraged? The Allegheny is miles long and there is really no need to target a particular spot as a "hotspot". I agree that this is rather irresponsible and counter to the mission of the PFBC. The PFBC also posted a recipe that uses 15 lbs of musky in a recent edition of the Angler. Obviously someone wants the musky to "go".

H2O Wolf do you happen to have the link for the article about the harvesting of muskies ? I looked on the site but can't find it. There really is a lot of these toothy critters around Tionesta, i live here, but i agree it's certainly irresponsible to put in bold letters where to fish. It is however no secret around here where to find them but as said they are all over up and down the river so why target us specifically. This area is under heavy pressure as it is. There are a couple spots that i can think of that do have entirely too many muskies but i don't think harvesting them is the answer, maybe relocation. I'm betting on what anzo said about someones crappies getting eaten up while pulling it in too many times.

I am all about catch and release. I work in Alaska and to keep a trout is like running over an old women leaving wal-mart. Unheard of. I can tell you for a FACT that the tionesta creek has PLENTY of big muskie. I think they should bring back the muskie tags used years ago. Pay an extra fee just like your trout stamp, but only give three to five tags per stamp, per year. Just my thoughts

Here they go again. What kind of fish commission is trying to direct someone to a spot and keep a musky. These guys were reported last time to Harrisburg and I guess they will be again. Why dosent the game commission tell you where a deer is hiding and chase it your way so you can shoot it. This is total B.S. Someones a$$ needs reamed out for this. We float stock and donate $$ then they pull this bs. We are suppose to be supporting catch and release. They NEED to come out with an annual Musky Stamp just like trout. $20 Stamp needed if you plan on keeping a Musky. I buy the stupid trout stamp and fish once or twice a year. Just my 2 cents...

The original was changed after complaints but Red still has this on the second page under fishing reports. here's what it said...
Forest County
Allegheny River – Anglers are catching musky and
northern pike at the Tionesta Sand and Gravel Boat Launch. Anglers
reported catching several musky a day. Anglers should consider keeping
some of the musky 40 inches or longer in this area.

Wow that's crazy to pin point the spot and it seems we all agree irresponsible. There's enough fishermen already around here. If they do that how are we supposed to catch the 50" we are always hoping for ? Most guys around here i know are catch and release. A 44" just across from there was found dead today.

Maybe the PFBC person who posted the Musky recipe on their site would enjoy dining on the 44" one found yesterday !
