It may be the earliest ice-out in recorded history.
The earliest ice-out date in 73 years of recorded history on Lake Bemidji (which is ten miles West of us) was April 11, 1973.
The earliest ice-out date in 72 years of recorded history on Leech Lake (which is 20 miles South of us) was April 9, 1945.
On April 3rd, 2010...other than small pockets against the shore...there was no visible ice on Big Wolf Lake, Andrusia Lake, Cass Lake, Leech Lake or Lake Winnibigoshish. (Big Winni, as it's called, is located just a few miles East of us.)
That means we broke the early ice-out record by nearly a week in most of our area lakes.
Last year we experienced what we call "a cold summer". The ice went out the first week of May. The opening weeks were cold and windy. Last July was also cold, with temps dropping into the 50's and upper 40's. September was easily our nicest month with temperature's in the 70's.
2010 looks like fish patterns may be moved up several weeks ahead of last year. This means anglers may have to make some adjustments. Maybe a record breaking weather year will bring some record breaking fish.
I don't like to play weatherman...but hopefully we will enjoy a long spring, a long warm summer and a warm yet cooling autumn until the end of October.
The nice weather has allowed us to bring more improvements to the resort. 2010 guests will enjoy better tap water, as we've added five new on-demand water heaters, which replaced the tank heaters...and we've brought Soft Water into the cabins and shower house. The Lodge has a new steel roof over the heated indoor pool, new windows, new insulation and new log siding. Our heated outdoor pool now has paver blocks and a green chain link fence. Cabin #10 has a new pitched steel roof and many other improvements. All of these improvements and more were done between January 2010 and April 2010.
Also new for 2010....Become a Fan of Oak Haven Resort on Facebook! Just click on our Facebook link at the bottom of our Home Page. See many photo's there that are not on our website or in our brochure.
We are now selling Oak Haven yardsticks....so take pictures of bigger fish that you intend to release, laying on that yardstick. Using a digital camera will allow you to easily enter the fish in our FISHING CONTEST...which is free for all our guests to enter. (See details in the lodge upon arrival) Warmer weather will mean more fishing hours for everyone and should result in even better fishing contest results! Our 2008 and 2009 Final Fishing Contest results are now posted in every cabin, the fish cleaning house and the lodge....so it will be easy for you to see what size fish you are after. (Our contest is by length, not weight) We chart the Top Ten of nine different species of fish.
To our many returning regular guests....we've been thinking about you all winter long and can't wait to have you here again. And to our first time guests?....we think you'll like it here!
Looking forward to 2010.
Great Fishing and Great Fun!
