Hello again everyone, this is Cathy from Aquatic Arts Fishing Pro Shop right here in Tomahawk. Prior to yesterdays crummy rainy weather, the fishing had been alot of fun!! The bluegills have been up in the shallows again, feeding on mayfly nymphs and other bugs. We caught some very nice gills in the shallow weedbeds, sometimes even in about 6 inches of water. The spawn is over, now the feeding frenzy has begun. Use small lead head jigs or ice fishing jigs tipped with a baby leech or piece of crawler. The leeches seem to be attracting the biggest, fattest gills..... 9-11 inches. The smallmouth bass action on the area River Systems has been strong and steady, these fish are very aggressive right now. Area fisherman have been catching some real pigs, 20-23inches. Use Mepps spinners, size 1-3, white has been working best. Also, rubber worms like SlopMonster's Wacky Garlic sticks along with Gary Yamamotos Yama Senkos have been producing big smallies. Rig the worms wacky style, right through the middle. As the worm falls, it moves erratically side to side, making it irrisistable to big bass. Fish near rock bars and weed beds, 4-8ft of water. This same approach will work for largemouth bass, but you may want to fish a bit shallower, 2-6 ft of water as the largies are cruising the shallow water. Reports on Crappies have been far and few between. Local anglers have been drift fishing with small jigs and crappie minnows over deep stumps and wood structure, but the bite has definitely been a bit slow. The Walleye bite has been holding steady. Fish the weed beds in the morning and evening hours using a crawler or leech harness with live bait. Also, try throwing some crankbaits along the weed-edges like Spro's new Madeye Shads, They rattle and twitch near the surface when retrieved slowly. These approaches have been producing keeper walleyes this past weekend. Anglers have been wacking the Northerns on all area lakes using Mepps number 5, Musky Killers in Black and Orange, and Johnson Silver Spoons. Fish Weed edges, weed pockets, and rock bars. Well, thats all for today, this has been your weekly fishing update with Catch em Cathy. I dont just go fishing, I go catching!!!
