Both Kakagi (Crow) lake and Lake of the Woods are reporting water temperatures in the low to mid 60's. We have been in a wet and cool weather pattern most of the past week.
The veteran fishing groups have struggled at times and the bite has been especially difficult for those new guests and those who have not fished the area for several years. Almost every day has been similar with about 80% of the fish caught each day coming during a couple hour period, regardless of species. Hope the fish bite pattern and weather changes soon.
Lake Trout - included a 10 pounder from the banks and an 8 pounder while jigging. Lake Trout seem to be headed toward the deeper holes.... but not yet feeding well in them.
Walleye- included a 27" and 29" from LOTW. Some are coming from the weeds and other seem to be in those areas of a transition on the bottom (rock to sand <or> rock to mud <or> weed edge).
Northern Pike - a few mid 30" Pike caught every day. Northern Pike are usually cooperative, but even the Pike seemed to be in the couple hour feed pattern.
Bass - now spawning in most area's on Kakagi. Sand to gravel bottom and usually near underwater wood. A few large 3-5 pound smallies were found on Cedartree and Kakagi.
Jumbo Perch - a few from Lake of the Woods and Cedartree were found, but no major quantities of them being caught.
Muskie - opener is this coming Saturday. Some are being seen paired up and spawning by the Bass fisherman... but not seeing the usual steady stream of them roaming around in the bays.
Many people have caught impressive sized fish this past week, but not the usual quantities and some very noticeable tough periods even for some of our most experienced and very successful anglers.
