Our lake temperatures have continued to climb. Occasionally the winds or cold fronts take the temperatures down a little. Kakagi (Crow) Lake is mid to upper 60's - kids and adults have been using the beach frequently. Lake of the Woods is mostly low 70's and occasionally a back bay will sneak up on 80 degree waters.
Lake of the Woods was in a pretty strong algae bloom around Stevens Bay, so it looked like your fishing in pea soup on Lake of the Woods. Fish were biting ok in it, but a lot of guests just didn't like fishing it for the Muskie opener, where we would like to see the fish following up.
On Kakagi we had our Mayfly hatch this past week about 2 weeks before normal.
Muskie opener week was slower then normal. Muskies seem to be really scattered and often when seen, found in bunches. Follows 2-3 at a time were reported by a couple groups. Some big Muskies found in shallow back bays, other big Muskies were on mid-lake rock structures. During the opener week three 48" Muskies were landed and about a dozen mid to upper 40's. Most groups saw a 50" fish and one groups saw the even less common 60" Muskie. In a few weeks we should have 4-5 cabins of serious Muskie anglers and hoping they do well with possibly the algae bloom and mayfly hatches out of the way.
Lake Trout should be settling in on the deep summer holes pretty soon. They were scattered this past week - some seen popping mayflies at the surface, others being caught from 125 feet.
Walleye on Lake of the Woods was good a couple weeks ago at times with a handful of Walleye in the upper 20 inch range. Cedartree Walleye action was fast this past week for some experienced Cedartree guys. They had periods of time where it was tough to catch the smaller Walleye as the 22" and up wouldn't stop biting.
Bass anglers did well on Kakagi with 408 caught this past week. 6.5 pounds was the biggest Smallie and several 5 pound bass also found. The previous week had some good bass action on Cedartree and Lake of the Woods.
Our Lodge project is moving slower then we would like. Concrete is now all in, the back portion of the lodge is now on its new foundation and almost done with re-leveling. We thought we would have the floor in this past week, but enough rain was predicted to prevent the workers from wanting to come (40-70 mile drive, so I somewhat understand they don't want to get here only to be rained out after a couple hours). Our trusses and truss-joists were delayed as it looks like they were being engineered to the wrong specifications - guessing 3 weeks before we see the trusses and truss-joists.
Next season, I think we will be thrilled with the lodge building.
Regards,
