Lake Conditions: Surface Water temp 69-72 degrees and warming. Water Clearity: Algea bloom occuring in certian parts of lake, thus light green in color. Areas not affected by bloom clear to 4 feet. Bug Hatch: Major mayfly hatch occuring on most parts of lake.
Fished Saturday with Don Dziedzina, outdoor writer for the Chicago Tribune and host of Illinois Outdoor TV show. Got a tv show "in the can" Found the smallmouths to be relating to rock reefs in 4 to 8 feet of water. Most all fish caught on 4 and 5 inch grubs, some on tube jigs. Don missed a hugh fish on camera...would guess 21 plus inches, but quickly made up for it with a solid 5 pound 4 oz pig. All in all around 20 fish were caught.
Fished June 30, with Christian and Jack Serik from Mendota Heights, MN. Bite was slow due to heavy mayfly hatch and some fish comming off beds. Fish's stomachs are full with mayflys, so a very SLOW presentation was required. Caught around 12 smallies on a beautiful sunny day but under extremely hard fishing conditions. Look for the bite to improve once bug hatch is over and post spawn fish begin to lock in on their summer time pattern.
