What a great week of weather and fishing. A little wind here and there, but most every day was fishable and the fish were c-operating.
Walleyes were absolutely crushing everything and the numbers of big walleyes from 25-27 was great. The numbers of big walleyes from 28-29 was incredible and the new leader for largest released walleye of the year came in at a strong 31 inches! My good friend Eric from Northland tackle outfitted al his buddies with some great walleye catching rigs and Mark from Pure Fishing had the gulp working strong. Fish were caught on minnows and live leeches as well but the Berkley/Northland combination was irrestistable for big walleyes. Reefs were the main structural element for walleye success. Mark the reef and work it top to bottom. The fish have moved around the water column at times, but usually appear in numbers in one area of a reef.
Muskie action was great as well. Mostly weed related this week, with sand making a difference some days, and not as uch on others. Weed/rock combos were hot as well. Again, Pure Fishing and Northland Tackle teamed up to put some really nice fish in the boat. Fish from 45-52 inches were landed, mostly on Northland Boobie Trap bucktails (number 8s) and Northland Booty Call spinner baits. A couple double 10 fish was well for good measure made it a great week. The Berkley boat had a heckuva last two days of fishing, with muskies of 47, 45, 47, 48, 50, 48, and 52 inches all caught Thursday and Friday. For good measure, a couple of 29 inch walleyes in between those muskies on Friday while trying to pick up a few more keepers for taking home. Black/orange, red/copper and Northland's perch colour pattern were pretty hot in the casting department.
Some great northerns and a few smallies thrown in for good measure.
The new week is off to a good start as well. The walleye should stay on the rocks and the muskies should be moving out there soon. When will the topwater bite get super hot? Shouldn't be long now!
