Big Chip Musky Hunt is under way this weekend
Two hundred anglers will enjoy fishing, camaraderie, food and prizes this Thursday through Saturday during the 12th annual catch-and-release Big Chip Musky Hunt hosted by the Lake Chippewa Flowage Resort Association.

Events began Wednesday with Skeeter Boat Center ride and drive demos from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Landing, followed by an electronics seminar. Fisherman’s camaraderie began at 6 p.m. Wednesday at The Landing.

Fishing will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There will be a Klement’s Brat Feed at noon Thursday at Deer Run Resort, and an “Explore the Area” day on Friday, with a goody bag of incentives to visit area businesses. The awards picnic will be held at Treeland Resorts at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Thousands of dollars in prizes will be awarded to anglers, including the grand prize random drawing Saturday evening for a TC-3 Outback 425 ATV sponsored by Don Johnson Auto Group.

The prizes for the longest muskies released alive are: First place, $2,000 gift certificate; second, St. Croix Legend rod, Calcutta 400TE reel and gift certificate package valued at $1,000; third, St. Croix Legend rod and Ambassador Record reel; fourth, Calcutta 400TE Record reel; fifth through seventh places, Stow Master nets; eighth through 10th places, Ambassador 6500C reels; and 11th “No Place” prize, a St. Croix Legend rod.

Here are the results of the Big Chip Musky Hunt as reported by the Sawyer County Record

49-incher tops Big Chip Musky Hunt
The 12th annual Big Chip Musky Hunt on Sept. 9-11 was filled to its usual 200-angler capacity.

Windy weather and higher water levels than in recent years may have impacted the total registration of 21 muskies ranging from 34 inches to 49-1/2 inches in length. All fish were released.

While 21 fish was an average number of catches for the tournament, it was well below the 34 registered in 2009 and the record number of 44 registered in 2008. Local guide Dan Seibert was awarded the first prize $2,000 gift certificate for Scheel’s Sporting Goods for his evening catch on a black Ghost Tail. Dan’s 49-1/2-inch inch fish tied for the second-largest musky ever caught in tournament history, just behind Carl Kennedy’s 50-inch winner in 2005.

Jerry Mannigel of Hayward was awarded second place with the 47-3/4-inch musky he caught the first evening of fishing in Moore’s Bay using a black Pacemaker. Jerry took second place two years ago with a 45-1/2-incher.

Third place was secured by Lindsay Eichler of Chicago. She released a 45-inch fish caught during morning fishing in Musky Bay on a Fire Tiger Pacemaker.

Musky Hunt is sponsored by the Lake Chippewa Flowage Resort Association, and heavily supported by their members and vendors. Park Ridge Distributing has been donating Budweiser products and providing posters and signage since the inception of Musky Hunt. Food vendors Reinhart and U.S. Foods contribute to the successful tournament.

Participants enjoyed ham stacker sandwiches and sides at the welcome event held at The Landing. Brats and all the fixings were served at Deer Run Resort as fishermen took a break on the first day of fishing.

Treeland Resorts provides the awards dinner on the last night. Competitors receive discount coupons and gifts in their contestant gift packets from the members of the LCFRA and door prizes are donated from members and local businesses alike.

Each registrant received a hat, lure and box of fishing line just for attending each meal. In addition, more than 100 door prizes were awarded at each gathering, including such gifts as custom roasted coffee, musky lures and Abu Garcia reels.

Place prizes were awarded for the top 10 fish by size released alive with an 11th place drawn from all other registered fish. Place and prizes awarded were:

First, Dan Seibert, Hayward, 49.5 inches, $2,000 gift certificate to Scheel’s; second, Jerry Mannigel, Hayward, 47.75 inches, $1,000 rod, reel and gift certificate package; third, Lindsay Eichler, 45 inches, St. Croix Legend rod and Ambassador Record reel; fourth, Ron Koperski, Oronoco, Minn., 44.5 inches, R & Bay, gold bucktail, Calcutta 400TE reel; fifth, Doug Hardy, Glen Ellyn, Ill., 44.5 inches, southeast Cedar Tops, green/black Cowgirl, Stow Master net; sixth, Robert Bjornton, Hayward, 44.25 inches, MBR, black bucktail, Stow Master net; seventh, Jeff Karl, Chandler, Ariz., 42 inches, Big Timber West, yellow bucktail, Ambassador 6500C reel; eighth, Chris Taft, Auburn, Penn., 41 inches, Kavanaugh Bay, green Tallywacker, Ambassador 6500C reel; ninth, Rob Meusec, Phillips, 40.25 inches, The Sticks, black and green Ghost Tail, Ambassador 6500C reel; 10th, David Hardy, St. Louis, Mo., 40 inches, Pine Island, green bucktail, Ambassador 6500C reel; 11th, Marc Christopher, Fall Creek, Wis., 34.5 inches, Scott Lake, black/green bucktail, St. Croix Legend rod.

Lastly, a grand prize TGB Outback 425 4-by-4 ATV purchased from Don Johnson’s Hayward Motors was awarded to Jenny Kangas of Nashotah, Wis., whose name was drawn from all of the registered contestants.

The 2010 registrants will receive a notice Feb. 1, 2011 to reserve their place for next year. Starting March 1, 2011, the tournament will open up to the public to fill openings as of that date.
