Hi folks
Well fall is upon us and conditions are pretty normal. Water temps are running between 55 and 58 during the day. This puts us on a collision course for turn-over. Once this event ends, we should see a very good fall bite when it comes to walleyes. Fishing hasn’t been all too bad – we’ve had some very good days, some mediocre days and a couple of stinkers. The main thing causing problems for us is the fact that September has been one crummy month – weather-wise. We seem to be getting a new front every other day and rain with each new front. High winds have also been the order of the day. Combine all these and the toughest part about catching fish is the weather.
Fish are beginning to switch over to minnows now and they’ve moved deep. Most of our action is coming in water depths ranging from 14 to 25 feet and the type of structure we’re concentrating on has been rock, hard bottom.
Musky fishing has entered its prime time. The sucker bite has started. This is one of my favorite things to do. We’ve been using medium-sized suckers, nothing too big and drifting in and around and outside of the weedbeds for the most part. I’ve been finding fish taking the sucker more often than lures now. When it comes to lures, sucker-type rubber baits are what’s working best. Lures such as the suzie suckers, bulldogs and the like are what the fish seem to be chasing and occasionally striking on. The next few days are going to show us some lousy weather – even WORSE than we’ve been getting – but if you’re able to sneak out between storms – musky fishing could be awesome.
Good luck fishing. Jeff Winters
