Can anyone recommend one of the temp and speed sensors that go on the down rigger ball that won't cost as much as a boat.I looked at the fishhawk but it's a little pricey. Thanks for any info.RDemler

All 3 are good. I have or had all of them. If I had to buy only one I'd buy a subtroll. You can get it around 400 on preseason sales. FH is nice that it doesn't need coated cable but the coated cable is not too much of an issue until you're fishing below 100'.

P.S. if you can't swing 4 bills fishawk and one other company have come out with a clip on unit that gives the useful info but you Haver to deploy and retrieve it to see the info. You can clip this onto any line I understand and it will give temp info at 5' depth increments but no speed I don't think. Also you could watch other sites like GLA classifieds for a used unit, might save you a hundred.

A used fish hawk 840 on ebay for under 300 right now.... Not the new style but great price.. http://cgi.ebay.com/FISH-HAWK-840-SPEED-AND-TEMP-UNIT-COMPLETE-/310301502550?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item483f692c56

Also you could try a WTB (wanted to buy) ad on craigslist.. Lots of guys have sold them with their rig and the new owner either dont know what it is or what it is worth... good luck

I should have clarified I have the new fishawk. The older model has a reputation for eating a lot of batteries fwiw.

Nice. I think you'll be happy with it. One other thing comes to mind, you may want to consider the larger diameter pickup antenna. The small spring one will get gobbed up with the filamentous algae that was a real problem last year and then it stops the cable from going thru it. This past year was the first year it was a problem for me but it was a PITA. I'm hearing the algae will likely be worse this year.

I'll give it a shot and if I have a problem I'll switch.I'm still trying to get set-up with everything.I have yet to catch anything worth talking about so I'm trying to increase my odds this year. It's gotten to the point that if you threw me a trout or salmon from 4 feet away I could'nt catch it.Thanks again.R.Demler
