Hi everyone,

Just read in the SAWYER COUNTY RECORD that the size limit for the LM Bass on the Chippewa Flowage has been removed. The DNR used an emergency rule to bring this about. The # 1 reason is because the LM Bass are stunting. Their surveys showed that 5 year old LM Bass were 11.3" long. The population of LM Bass is just to high, and needs to be reduced to bring them back into line. The other residual affect is their negative impact on all the other species in the lake.

This is very good news. Not only will it help the Walleye population recover, but it will result in a stronger LM Bass fishery with bigger Bass in the future. The keep season does not start until late June still, but now we can harvest the 12"-14" LM Bass for the table. They are excellent table fare. I'll show my clients how to fillet the LM Bass to remove the lateral line. That is just cartilidge, and when it is removed, makes for a very tasty fillet.

The size limit will remain in effect on the SM Bass. The DNR urges us to release them. This emergency rule will expire in three years, when it will be evaluated.
Good luck fishing everyone.
