a rule of thumb is typically it is very difficult to trap natural suckers (not pond raised) before water temps drop below 60 degrees so usually that coincides with mid/late sept or so give or take a week either way depending on weather and water temps. if you could get them and you were in the a cold front,n,nw,ne winds,dropping water temp situation live baits would/could be a consideration that could save the day.
last season pete,ricky medlock , and next bite tv came up to film a show and have a good time. it was a weird season and water temps were already below 60 by end of 1st week of sept with cold fronts rolling in one after the other,very tough conditions,only had a day and 1/2, and i was nervous about pulling it off. got lucky and got ahold of a few suckers just in case. we got 4 lost 4, 2 boated were on live baits and we didn't use them till the 2nd 1/2 day. a few days later we went into a sunny heat wave ,water temps went up and it was over till later.
with typical weather from end of aug/first part of sept with mid 60's-70 degree water,relativley stable conditions,it would be a much higher % to run and gun hittng prime structures with artificials,live baits would slow you down to much,are hard to keep alive for prolonged periods, and just don't seem to be as effective normally under these conditions.
