sorry about lack of reports last few weeks, been swamped with a full camp of great and enthusiastic guests i needed to take care of,scheduling and coordinating 11-13 guides and fly-ins daily, guiding both day and some pms after dinner so needless to say 18/7+ days/hrs time has flown by.
overall had a great week weather wise, dodged forecasted rain several days and water temps have risen into the low 60's big eagle sections and upper 60's even touching 70's in back channel,vb and western sections.
weed growth is starting to catch up quickly now. hint of the mayfly hatch starting (no it is not the kiss of death as so many use the excuse for, actually the start of it jump starts a great pre summer bite) so a large % of the walleyes have made a move up onto the flats with mud/sand bottom,grass/weeds and are putting on the feed bag feeding aggresivly. look to the grassline/mud line transition edge at 12-15' most days for the best bite though fish are scattered also up on top of the flats and with wind can be bunched up on the weed/rock shoreline/points,downed timber, even right up in the reed transition areas shallow 3'-8'. when you find fish in real shallow under these conditions they will be stacked, feeding heavily and it is a fish fest. fish are also still using some humps 17-22" especially in the central section. eagle has been excellent over all, guides consistantly avgd. 50-100 fish days with lots of fish 22-26" besides eaters and a number of 28-31" were caught last 2 weeks. the fly-ins were outstanding last week with groups reporting 150-300 fish days on avg.and the 4wds peaked with excellent catches of walleyes, bass, and muskies to 51.5".
jigs, plain hook rigs, spinner rigs with minnows though here on for the next few weeks crawlers and leeches will also kick in as good bait choices. keep it simple, jigs, lindy rigs, spinner rigs, and shallow running minnow baits/cranks are all you need to catch walleyes.
nicer sized pike are showing up now shallow with some groups casting reeds and reed/weed edges in shallow reporting numbers of fish 24-38",some bigger fish 38-42" were caught fishing walleyes on the humps and points with bigger minnows or grabbing small walleyes.
for the most part bass are leaving bedding areas and moving to reed/rock combos, timber, and small island/rock clusters. x-raps,shad raps, tubes, flukes accounting for most fish.when all else fails a big leech on a split shot rig or drop shot rig will turn the tables in your favour.
amazingly on outlying lakes lake trout were still 20-30' on avg. no one fished eagle for trout last though i would start at 40-60' and it has always been a grerat time for big trout on eagle in the past years.been mostly jigging 1/2-5/8 oz white/glow/chart jigs with sucker minnows or white gulp.
musky season opened last sat thopugh we had only a few casting exclusivly for muskies. was a bit spotty. there were fish boated 40-46",several big ones lost,54",51,49.47,caught walleyes fishing. this week got more doing it so will have a better report, already just this am. sunday 6/26 got a call from scotty and his group boated a big heavy 52" off of shallow rocks on a #10 blades in the figure 8,great heart throbbing stuff!!. blades, topwater, minnowbaits, and suicks moving most fish in weeds and shallow rocks. now since thurs water warmed up 5-8 degrees with it is slowly and steadily climbing and it should make a big diff in muskys moving and going to the next level of activity.expect some good reports and some big fish caught next few weeks on.
we are now heading into a great time of season,if you are looking to make it up got an opening july 2-9,1 cabin just became available july 30-aug 6, aug 20-27,aug 27-sept 3,and some availablity sept 10-0ct 8.
great fisahing to all!!
