I had the chance to take my brother and nephew out fishing Friday. They live in Madison and always try to get at least one trip on the river in. Last year, Alex caught a crappie just under 16" so we were trying to put another big fish in the boat. Needless to say, within fifteen minutes of launching the boat, Alex was into a fight with a huge smallmouth. He did a great job fighting the fish and it soon found it's way to the boat. Just under 21" and pushing 4 1/2 lbs it was a great fish. The river lived up to it's reputation on Friday and we put fish after fish into the boat. Every fish was put back to fight another day and by the end of the trip we had caught crappies, bass, northerns, catfish, and walleyes. Small jigs and slipbobbers with minnows over deeper structure was the ticket for day. Water temps were pushing 83 degrees. Take a kid fishing. Will post pictures tomorrow
