STRONGS PRAIRIE — a 61-year-old Illinois man is dead after he drowned in the Castle Rock Flowage, authorities said this evening.
David Schmitt of Oak Forest, Ill, and his wife were launching their boat at the County Park boat landing on Highway 21 in Strongs Prairie when the boat drifted away from them, according to a news release from the Adams County Sheriff’s Department. Schmitt jumped into the water in an attempt to recover the boat and did not return to the surface.
At 6:59 a.m. today, the Adams County Sheriff’s Department received the call and responded with the Quincy Fire Department and Curtis Ambulance Service, the release said.
The Juneau County Dive Team assisted with locating Schmitt, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
