FISHING REPORT
Note: Early catch-and-release trout season opened March 2; game fish season closed March 3.
Crappie:
The already good crappie action will only get better as we move towards ice-out. Best fishing is in early morning or late afternoon just before dark. Although anglers in the past did quite well without electronics, they can greatly enhance your fishing success. Search deeper water flats, weeds, wood, and other structure for suspending crappies. Check the entire water column – you might find crappies holding near/tight to the bottom or just under the ice. Top baits include crappie minnows, fatheads, rosy reds, waxies, wigglers, spikes, plastics, and Gulp! baits on teardrops, small jigs, and plain hooks. Small Swedish Pimples, Forage Minnows, and other jigging baits are also effective.
Bluegill:
Bluegill anglers are doing well on most lakes and fishing will improve with warmer weather. Concentrate on areas with weeds, wood, cribs, and other structure in depths from 5-30 feet, depending on the lake. Tip teardrops, small jigs, and plain hooks with waxies, spikes, plastics, and Gulp! baits – and lighter tackle will increase your success.
Perch:
Perch action is good on a number of area lakes, though most catches require sorting for a meal. Look for fish holding near/on the bottom in various depths, from 5-20 feet and deeper, around weeds and mud bottoms. Tip-ups with small fatheads, rosy reds, waxies, wigglers, plastics, and Gulp! baits are effective presentations, as is using jigging spoons tipped with waxies or minnow pieces/heads.
