GLADSTONE - John "Butch" Caswell, 71, of Gladstone passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at the Marquette General Hospital in Marquette.

John was born Oct. 2, 1942, in Escanaba, the son of John Caswell and Genevieve Shafer. John served his country proudly as a 22-year veteran in the United States Army as a paratrooper and ranger. He served three tours in Vietnam and was the recipient of two Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts. He was a beloved father and brother who enjoyed spending time with his family, an avid sportsman who loved to hunt and fish, enjoyed spending time in Alaska and loved the Green Bay Packers.

John is survived by his son, John (Phil Garcia) Caswell of Alma, Mich.; two brothers, Robert (Chris) Caswell of Gladstone and Paul "Duffy" Nelson of N.C.; five sisters, Pearl "Dovie" Caswell of Epoufette, Mich., Nancy (Lawrence) Hansen of Gladstone, Candy (Chase) Rivers of Gladstone, Emmey (John) Sundstrum of Rapid River and Barbara (David) Phegley of Kenai, Alaska; numerous nieces and nephews and his devoted companion, Eileen Demeuse of Gladstone.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will receive friends on Monday, April 7, from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Military Honors will be presented by the Gladstone American Legion August Mattson Post 71 at 12:15 p.m. Memorial services will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Robert Derheim officiating. A luncheon will follow at the Gladstone American Legion.
