Andy and I hit the river today hoping to get some musky pics while fishing with his custom Rig Boss 9. As luck would have it, the first fish of the season was a very thick 50.5. Most folks seem to go a little smaller in the Spring but to me, a 9-inch bait seems pretty small when it is stuffed down the throat of a big-headed fatty like the one below.
It was a nice windy day to be out there. We saw 1 musky and managed to catch it and we also hit a nice pike on the RBoss 9.

The crazy part is that it would probably take 5 to 7 more inches of fish AT THAT GIRTH to even be in the state record conversation. Will it ever be broken?

Just a little FYI.....I also just remembered how thick the tail was as I was releasing her. I remember thinking to myself, “this is the thickest tail I have ever had my hand around.” (Keep your minds out of the gutter.)

LOL I can see that. That fish is pretty much "girthy" from snout to tail.

Wow! That is a monster. Is the Rig Boss a glider? Do you think people catch fish on smaller lures in the spring because thats what the fish want, or because thats what many people throw?

Yes, a glider.
IMO, I think the "smaller bait in the Spring" gig is for post-spawn females who are beat up and in need of recuperation which could make a smaller food item more attractive. Personally, I only use smaller baits if it appears the fish are turned waaaaaay off as a result of a severe cold front.
Just my .02 cents.

But I am also always chasing the largest muskie I can possibly find so using smaller baits is something I rarely do.

I hear that. Nothing like targeting the big girls!
derailing a bit... Regionally sized lure patterns have always been fascinating to me. "People throw monster lures in Canada" or "that lure is too big for Ohio" etc. Even in situations where the natural baitfish are the same sizes in both locations.
