Guests from outside of Minnesota came here in 2008 and did real well.
Our "Just for Fun Fishing Contest" is for all Oak Haven customers. We take the fish from the guests and measure them ourselves, or accept a clear digital photo, to assure a fair and accurate contest. We close the mouth and squeeze the tail together.
We tracked the Top Ten of eight different species. The current standings are posted in the lodge and in the fish cleaning house, all year long. Unless our December guests catch a really big fish, these should be the final 2008 numbers...
MUSKY - It may say "just for fun"...but this picture is headed for the cover of our new brochure. On June 10th, Mike Hoffman of Rockford, Illinois, landed our 2008 Musky Champion...a beautiful 46 incher. (See "Photo Gallery" tab for pictures of fish.)
PIKE - Ed Hoyle and his wife traveled here from Goldendale, Washington. On July 15th Ed landed our Champion Pike....a nice 35 incher. Second place went to Todd Schumacher of Omaha, Nebraska. Todd landed his 34 1/2 inch Pike on August 27th.
WALLEYE - On August 10th, Dave Lemke, from Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, brought in a huge 28 1/2 inch Walleye, our 2008 Champion. This fish is also headed for the new brochure. (The best "stringers" of 14-20 inch Walleyes were from May 10 to July 4.)
LARGEMOUTH BASS - Our 2008 Champion Largemouth Bass was landed by Ed Hoyle of Goldendale, Washington. His 20 3/4 incher narrowly edged the 2nd biggest Bass of 2008, which was 20 1/2 inches and was landed by Rick Martens of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. All of our Top Ten Largemouth Bass were between 18 3/4 inches and 20 3/4 inches.
CRAPPIE - On June 8th, Duane Weaver of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, brought in our Champion Crappie for 2008. His monster 14 1/2 incher barely edged the 2nd place Crappie, landed on June 1st by Sean Houi of Rockford, Illinois. Our Top Ten Crappies were all 13 1/8 to 14 1/2 inches. Many Crappies 12 to 13 inches were landed all year long.
PERCH - Linda Lund of Wilton, Iowa, came here to vacation with her family. On July 18th she went fishing and landed Oak Haven's Giant Perch for 2008. Her 12 1/2 inch Perch edged Roger Boatright of Omaha and Jim Katers, who each landed a 12 1/4 incher. All of our Top Ten Perch were 11 1/2 inches to 12 1/2 inches.
ROCK BASS - If you're looking for action....try Rock Bass!! They are here in great numbers and they fight like the dickens. Our Rock Bass Championship ended in a tie between Jamie Sherman of Hebron, Indiana, and Jordan Johnson at 11 7/8 inches. Eddie Houi of Rockford, Illinois, was right behind them with an 11 3/4 incher.
BLUEGILL (Including Sunfish and Pumpkinseed) - If you have yet to see the colors of the Pumpkinseed up close...you're missing something special. With the State Record being 10 1/4 inches...we are proud that our Top Ten for 2008 were all between 9 7/8 inches and 10 1/8 inches. We have a tie in this category too....a 10 1/8 incher was landed by Dave Lemke of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, on August 11th....as well as Owen Brummer of Waconia, Minnesota, on August 14th.
Be sure to see our new brochure, being released in December. Our current brochure has three panels and has 13 pictures. The new brochure will be six panels and will have 45 pictures...ALL from 2008!!
Remember...opening week in 2008....May 10-17...our guests enjoyed good Walleye fishing, while many people had to cancel their reservations to Leech Lake and Cass Lake resorts, due to ice on those lakes. No problems with ice here...and the Walleyes can be landed very close to our resort.
With a Digital Camera....pictures can go from the camera to our website in just minutes.
Come to Oak Haven Resort in 2009. And remember every time you put your bait in the water, you have a chance to win one of our fishing contest categories. You might find your picture on our website...or maybe in our brochure!
Now taking 2009 reservations. Please call between 8 AM and 8 PM.
