Early Season

TY!, on the chip, for the 1st few weeks of the season, do you find yourself throwing smaller, slower baits, like a Big Game/Suick/small bulldawg/maybe a glider...

or are they super aggressive after spawning...so you speed up by throwing bucktails and scissor baits?

IF it does start slow...what transitional things can one look for, to see if they are going to be more active, like water temp...ect...(for example...when the water temp reaches 70 degrees, they become more active...ect)

Do you re-tie all of your reels before the opener?

First, yes, I retie all my reels. My reels get used more than most though. If you've only used your line for a couple weeks it should be fine.

OK, early in the season I do use smaller baits. Sometimes even Rapala Husky Jerks. If the water temps are colder than 60 degrees I stay pretty slow too. When the temps get up over 60 degrees(that's mainlake water temp) I start to speed up some, use larger baits, and even break out the topwater. For the most part you can tell when to speed up by the baitfish activity on top. Usually the baitfish don't surface much until the water warms some.

Amazing that both crocodiles and Wisconsin musky show a preference for topwater baits. :D

Just a few comments on the continued development of your website over the past few years. During the season, it's a source of fishing activity on a daily basis with reported catches, follows, misses, lure types, color combinations and general locations to assist in finding active fish. This is invaluable when we come up for a quick weekend and need to get a "pulse" on what's happeneing right then on "The Chip."

The overall feedback being shared by visitors and clients has improved over the years. I also like that conversation is generally limited to The Chip and doesn't focus on world records, Wisc vs Minn 50" fish, etc.

Addressing threads which were posted earlier in the year on what techniques and methods you use has helped shorten the learning curve for all of us.

Keep up the great work and I look forward to the 2009 season.

Thanks Chuck. It's fun for me because I don't get to see you guys as much as I would like and this site is one way to keep in touch. It's slow in the winter but still fun to post daily.

It's also nice to have this site to see some of the stuff Snizz will post. I like the gator pic! That's a crazy picture.
