The lakes are warming and the fish are practically jumping in the boat late this week! Kakagi (Crow) Lake is about 45 degrees and LOTW is hitting mid 50's in the back shallow bays.
Lake Trout have been biting pretty solid and one of the hot spots is in our bay. Casting stick baits over deep water just off our docks is working well at dusk as the Crow Lake Shiners are moving into the shallower waters. Trolling deep running minnow rigs is also working for the Lake Trout. Another successful method this week has been casting shorelines with tube baits. Early in the week it was a real struggle for Lake Trout, but the week is ending with a good bite. Lake Trout still mostly running in the 4 – 9 pound range.
Walleye action on LOTW has been solid with a 27” and 29” Walleye early in the week. The smaller eating sized Walleye have been easier catches late in the week. Jig and minnow is still a great way to get the Walleye.
Crappies have been moving into Stevens Bay and on Caliper Lake the last couple days – a 15” 1.6 lbs Crappie was the best from Stevens Bay and a 15.5” best from Caliper Lake but several other nice Crappies with lots of 12”-14” Slab Crappie being caught.
Northern Pike on LOTW have been feeding up with all of the fish moving shallow, almost every day 1-2 36” - 40” Northern Pike have been caught. Northern seem to be biting on everything and everywhere from Crappie baits to 30' Walleye holes with many also being caught in shallow water where the weeds will be coming.
Cedartree Northern Pike were a little lazy and most active in corners of the shallow bays on the stained water side of Cedartree – often seeing 2 pike follow on a cast and many of the bays are holding 20 – 50 Northern Pike. Bigger Pike most often are feeding a little deeper then the smaller fish. When you find the schooled Northern Pike that are not biting, usually changing the presentation, color and/or bait size will get them going. Another tip is to fish the same spot two or more times – Frequently you can catch 5-6 Pike per drift across the bays on Cedartree.
Perch action on LOTW has also taken off this week – some nice Jumbo Perch being caught but they were mostly on accident. The Jumbo Perch were not in the shallow waters on Cedartree yet, but should be moving in soon – when you Perch fish with a #5 Mepps, its a good time!
The Bass even starting moving up on LOTW and Cedartree Lake late in the week! The stained water side of Cedartree had the Smallies sitting in the 5-7 feet of water in the sandy spawning area's – no action on the rocks yet and tough to pull more then 2 out of a school without spooking them off.
The fishing was a little slow at the beginning of the week, but with the slight warm-up it has ended with excellent fishing! Looking like we will start our week a wet and cool with more sun and warm weather coming.
