This past weekend and Monday were spent checking out a small river flyfishing for smallmouth. The river was really low for this time of year but the smallies were pretty cooperative and there was plenty of action. The fish were pretty small though. Some were 16-17", but most were 13-15" - pretty small compared to the smallmouth found in the Mississippi or Mille Lacs. Still, it was great fishing and a lot of fun.

The photos are of a few of Kyler's fish and a couple of me. The day I fished with Kyler we spent most of the day leap-frogging up and down the river. During the little time we were together, the fish we caught were small - as you can see in the photos.

Smallmouth are awesome and are pound-for-pound one of the best sportfish in freshwater. Even the small ones put up a great fight.

Question: Are those neoprene waders? I don't flyfish but isn't that kinda old school? And hot?

Good to see you actually posting photos. keep em coming.

I was wearing some old, leaky neoprenes that I fixed with Aquaseal. It was a bit chilly that day so I wore them to see whether or not they would leak. I figured it would be better to find out on a fairly comfortable day. Kyler had wore them in previous weeks and they leaked pretty bad. With the exception of that day's test-run, I always wear my Simms Guidewear, which breath and and are much more comfortable. Yes, neoprenes can be really hot and clammy, but I felt OK.

I'll try to keep posting photos from time to time, but it'll be harder when musky season starts. During the season I'm burning the candle at both ends and five places in the middle. It's hard enough to keep up on voicemail and e-mail and e-mailing photos to clients. Downloading photos and compressing them to post is a pain in the butt and I'm not very diligent about keeping it up during the season. That said, I'll do my best.
