It is starting to feel like early summer at Boreal Bay and the lake temps are rising quickly. A string of light winds and sunny skies has pushed Kakagi (Crow) Lake water temps to the upper 50's with some back bays now reaching 65 degree waters. Lake of the Woods would be running a little warmer, but no current temperatures reported this weekend.
Jenny and Amy were the first swimmers this season, usually we see some warm days in May which has someone brave enough to take a plunge! Jenny says the water is much warmer near the surface and you don't need to go down very far to feel the colder water.
The warmer weather has the Bass groups smiling as Kakagi is the lake they really want to fish. In the next couple days the boats should start catching 100 bass per day. Some nice 3-6 pound bass being caught. One boat also found bass on Lake of the Woods. Plastics, lipless crankbaits and inline spinners are catching the bass this week.
Lake Trout have been solid, but mostly smaller trout being caught during the transition to deeper waters. A couple 9 pound Lake Trout caught. We are very glad to see many in the 2-4 pound range, to confirm the health of the fishery, because the ice-out fishermen caught very few smaller sized fish. Jigging has usually producing 5-11 fishing in a couple hours and most productive areas are 50-78 foot waters.
Walleye were a struggle early last week, but they improved as the weather started to stabilize. 24" was best Walleye with several 16-22". Jigging and trolling lipless crankbaits just outside of the weeds were both successful.
Northern Pike have been biting good on Kakagi and LOTW, biggest for the week were 32" and 34". In late May guests were almost daily reporting Northerns 35" - 40", lots of smaller one being caught this past week.
A day trip to Caliper Lake produced some nice Crappie and good eating sized Walleye for a husband/wife fishing team.
This past week we had a couple new groups of guests in, with very few of our veterans around for a few days during the week. The new groups did very well, struggled a little on new water - but by the end of the week they were catching fish just like the veterans.
Our Muskie fishing groups will be arriving late this week for Ontario Muskie season opener this coming Saturday. The Perch arrived at our docks yesterday and so we are now starting to see the Muskies cruising around our docks. The Bass fishermen are reporting sightings of lots of muskies in the shallow bays which is pretty much what the Muskie opener groups were hoping to see!
Regards,
