Late Ice Perch fishing
Late ice, ice fishing is going pretty well on Lake Gogebic. The Walleye season is closed but the perch fishing is underway. We have had such cold weather this year and epic snow fall conditions have been less than favorable to get outside and enjoy the outdoors.
The 10 day forecast looks pretty good to get outside and enjoy some of these winter activities. Ice fishing for the perch on Gogebic has been pretty good and going to get better. Travel is pretty much by snowmobile only. We have some areas that have deep slush. Check with locals before venturing out. Staying on the hard packed areas that the snowmobiles are running is the way to get around the lake. Venturing out into the middle of the lake could create some problems.
Most of the people that are finding success are fishing the transition where the breaks around the lake slide in to the mud. This is not a numbers bite on Gogebic but it is a fishery with Giant Perch. So with that be said Remember that the daily bag limit is 25 with no more than 5 over 12 inches. So that means when you have your 5th fish of 12 inches you are done for the day. The whole point of this legislative change is to protect the perch fishery. Please enjoy the what Lake Gogebic has to offer but practice catch and release of these big female perch if you can. If you bring them up nice and slow so they don't blow their stomach you can release these female fish that are carrying about 50,000 eggs each.
